The BN44 battery model name, also typed bn 44, belongs to the Redmi 5 Plus, the phone Xiaomi sold in India as the Redmi Note 5. Listings give it 4000 mAh at 3.85 V, while Xiaomi branded packs print 3900 mAh, the minimum line.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro, launched alongside it, looks almost the same but takes BN45. That pairing causes more wrong orders than any other old Redmi battery.

One phone, two names behind the BN44 battery model name

Xiaomi launched the Redmi 5 Plus in China and sold the same phone in India as the Redmi Note 5. Its model codes start MEG7 and MEI7. That is why BN44 listings name both, and why an Indian owner who searches "Redmi 5 Plus battery" finds the right part.

Counting the cameras is the fastest check. The plain Note 5 has one rear lens; the Pro has two stacked vertically.

3900 or 4000 mAh

Most aftermarket BN44 packs print 4000 mAh, the figure Xiaomi used in adverts. Packs carrying the Xiaomi logo print 3900 mAh, the lower bound. At 3.85 V that is about 15 to 15.4 Wh. A BN44 claiming 5000 mAh does not fit honestly into a 4 mm thick slot.

The capacity explainer covers the two figures.

BN44 battery model name on a genuine label

An original BN44 label shows the Xiaomi or Mi logo, the code BN44, 3.85 V, a charge limit around 4.4 V, the rated 3900 mAh and a long serial line. Aftermarket packs often drop the logo and print 4000 mAh only. That is acceptable if the pack is well made, but a missing serial or a capacity far above 4000 mAh is a red flag. Hold both packs: a decent copy sits in the palm with much the same heft as the Xiaomi original.

The Note 5 charges through micro USB at up to 10 W, so a full charge takes over two hours. A worn charging port is common on these phones and can look like a battery fault.

Replacing BN44 in an older Redmi

The Redmi Note 5 has a metal back with plastic caps, and opening it needs care around the fingerprint sensor cable. A repair shop familiar with older Redmi phones can do it in under an hour. Ask to see the BN44 label on the new pack and check the batch line.

Phones from this generation are now several years old, and their cells may be swollen without obvious signs. If the screen has started to lift, unplug it and do not use it until the pack is out.

Is a new battery worth it for a Note 5

The Note 5 no longer gets software updates, and some newer apps run slowly on it. For calls, chat and music, a fresh BN44 restores a full day of use cheaply. For anything more, consider a newer phone from the Redmi family list. If you are keeping it, our health check guide helps you judge the old pack first.

Signs your BN44 has had its day

A Redmi Note 5 whose battery is worn often restarts when the camera opens, shows 1 percent for a long time and then dies, or charges to 100 in under an hour from low. Each of these points to a cell that has lost much of its capacity.
